Review: Beartrax - Dream Riff EP (incl. Carl Finlow Remix) »

NYC artist Ehsan Akbari aka Beartrax has repped a host of the world’s best house labels such as Nite Grooves, Motek, Retune and Lost Diaries. His latest sees him return to his Melodize label courtesy of the fantastic Dream Riff EP. Featuring a stunning remix from the master of the deep, Carl Finlow, this is most definitely a release for discerning heads.

Title track Dream Riff gets us going with a melodic flourish. A genuinely interesting and unique sounding track, props must go to the producer for packing so much punch into this one. With vintage horns that bring back memories of Strictly’s finest moments and a saxophone vibe that’s hard to shake, this one could easily have gone down a shaky path, but manages to navigate everything with some panache. Very nice work from Beartrax here.

Up next is Carl Finlow’s interpretation of Dream Riff. The ‘Anomaly’ producer is a consistent force when it comes to all things electro, and his remix is a suitably killer one. More introspective than its bigger brother, it nonetheless makes a lasting impression thanks to its many downtempo vibes.

Closing off matters is the immediately impressive sounds of Repentance. A melancholic track that’s nothing if not aptly named, this whimsical slice of enticing deep house is a truly captivating, meandering listen that deserves to be appreciated long after this most tumultuous of years has passed. A winding, enticing track that builds in quite ecstatic fashion, it really forces an impression and is arguably the most emphatic of Melodize’s efforts to date.

Beartrax’s Dream Riff is out November 27th via Melodize here: . Keep up with Beartrax on Facebook and Resident Advisor.
